The Phantoms wins International Emmy Kids Award

The Phantoms, a TV movie from director Sudz Sutherland and Halifax producer Dream Street Pictures, won an International Emmy Kids Award Monday night in the TV movie/miniseries category.

The Phantoms is based on the true-life events and aftermath of a 2008 crash that killed seven high school basketball players from Bathurst, New Brunswick. The crash also killed the coach’s wife. A year after the crash, however, the boys’ basketball team won the provincial championship.

The Phantoms first aired on CBC in the fall of 2012. The Phantoms was produced by Timothy M. Hogan and Rick LeGuerrier, and written by Andrew Wreggitt.

Also nabbing the spotlight at the International Emmy Kids Awards was Pet School from Cineflix Productions, the UK satellite arm of Montreal-based Cineflix Media. The show aims to teach kids what it takes to care for animals, and won in the non-scripted entertainment category.

Nick Cory-Wright and Camilla Lewis executive produced Pet School, with Chris Atteshlis, Tim Duck and David Taylor producing and directing. Christopher McGuire penned Pet School.
