America’s National Board of Review (NBR) has named Sarah Polley’s Stories We Tell (pictured) as the best documentary of 2013.
The NBR also named its top five documentaries of the year. In alphabetical order, they were 20 Feet from Stardom, The Act of Killing, After Tiller, Casting By and The Square.
The news comes after the NFB-backed Stories We Tell earlier this week won the same prize from the New York Film Critics Circle, and earned a place on the Oscar shortlist for Best Documentary Feature. The addition of this latest accolade bodes well for the film’s chances of securing an Academy Award nomination.
The NBR’s annual Awards Gala, which also acts as a fundraiser for student grant philanthropy, will take place on January 7, 2014 in New York City.
