The Toronto International Film Festival this week released the organization’s five-year strategic plan for 2013 through 2017.
The plan “is steered by the vision to be a global centre for film culture,” according to a release from TIFF.
The strategy highlights four key priorities as its foundation: artistic excellence, visitor experience, people & culture and sustainability.
According to the plan, the organization will lead its decision-making and create programming based on potential impact on the global stage and create a foundation for its digital expansion.
At home, the organization plans to strengthen its local operations through diversifying its revenue mix, finding new audiences and investing in staff and volunteers.
As part of developing artistic excellence, TIFF will focus on diversity in programming, championing the history and artistic value of global cinema, and promoting the significance of the Canadian film industry by exhibiting the works of Canadian filmmakers.
A main sustainability theme in the strategic plan is to achieve sufficient revenue to invest in new opportunities, break even annually and repay existing debt by 2028.
TIFF reports a more than tripling of revenue growth over the past 11 years, from $11.2 million in 2002 to an expected $40 million by the end of 2013.
Government funding contributes to 14% of the organization’s operating budget, while philanthropy and membership are expected to account for about 15% of its total revenue in 2013 (up from 8% in previous years), according to the strategic plan.
“The past five years have been a period of major transformation for this organization. During the next five years we will build upon this foundation and go beyond – extending our impact and expanding our audience while strengthening our roots at home. In this plan, we identify the areas we want to invest in order to accomplish our mission of transforming the way people see the world, through film,” said TIFF director and CEO Piers Handling in a statement.
