Semi Chellas, Margaret O’Brien to receive Crystal Awards

Women in Film and Television – Toronto (WIFT-T) on Tuesday unveiled the winners of its 2013 Crystal Awards, to be presented at a gala luncheon in December.

The awards recognize the achievements of Canadian women and men in film, TV and digital media, selected by WIFT-T members and an independent jury of past award winners.

This year, Mad Men screenwriter Semi Chellas receives the creative excellence award. Chellas, also a director-producer, is a co-exec producer and writer on AMC’s period drama.

Margaret O’Brien, president, Canada and COO of eOne Television, receives the award for outstanding achievement in business. O’Brien oversees eOne TV’s scripted and non-scripted development in Canada and production activity for its lineup, which includes Hell on Wheels, Rookie Blue, Haven and Call Me Fitz.

And director-writer-producer Lalita Krishna is the recipient of the WIFT-T Mentorship Award, while producer Sheila Hockin, who has worked on international copro TV series including The Borgias and The Tudors, receives the Special Jury Award of Distinction. The Mentorship Award recognizes an outstanding contribution to building women’s careers in screen-based media and/or assists female entrepreneurs in growing their own companies, while the Special Jury Award of Distinction is presented to a trailblazer in the screen-based industry.

This year’s jury included Julie Bristow, president and CEO of Bristow Global Media; Susan Ross, partner at ISM Access Consulting; and Virginia Thompson, partner, president and exec producer at Verite Films.

The 2013 Crystal Awards will be presented on Dec. 3 at the Arcadian Court in downtown Toronto.
