Telefilm Canada announced Thursday that it is backing the production of nine English- and French-language feature films with a total of $12 million through its Canada Feature Film Fund.
“Our portfolio is as diverse as ever, broadening to thrillers, fantasies and other genres while maintaining our commitment to financing high-quality dramas,” said Telefilm executive director Carolle Brabant in a statement.
Upcoming comedy Dr. Cabbie, directed by Jean-Francois Pouliot, received the largest amount of production funding at $4 million. The Caramel Films production, written by Vinay Virmani (Breakaway), is about an immigrant unemployed doctor-turned-cab driver becoming a local hero when he converts his cab into a mobile clinic.
David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars received $3.5 million in production funding. The Canada-Germany coproduction, written by Bruce Wagner, is produced by Toronto-based Prospero Pictures and Plausible Communications corporation. The star-heavy cast includes Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, Robert Pattinson, John Cusack, Olivia Williams and Sarah Gadon, in a story that explores the culture of celebrity obsession.
And Canada-Italy coproduction Midnight Sun from director Roger Spottiswoode received $2.4 million. Written by Hugh Hudson and Bart Gavigan, the action-adventure flick is produced by Les Films Seville, Rob Heydon Productions, Original Pictures, Media-Max and HD Productions Distribution.
Jason Stone’s thriller The Calling, written by Scott Abramovitch and produced by Manis Film, received $600,000. The cast for The Calling includes Susan Sarandon, Ellen Burstyn, Topher Grace, Gil Bellows and Donald Sutherland for the story about a string of gruesome murders that happen in a sleepy countryside town.
Also receiving funding were Lièvres and Teen Lust, at $500,000 apiece. Lièvres is written and directed by Dominic Goyer and produced by Caramel Films, while Blaine Thurier’s Teen Lust is produced by Vancouver-based Independent Edge Films and written by Thurier and Jason Stone.
Elsewhere, Philippe Lesage’s Les Démons received $350,000; Chloé Leriche’s Avant les rues received $250,000; and Craig Goodwill’s Patch Town received $80,000.
