U.S. Syfy channel acquires Space’s ‘Bitten’ drama

LAURA-VANDERVOORT - Bitten

The Space original drama Bitten has been picked up by the U.S. Syfy channel.

Entertainment One sold the first season of the 13-part Canadian female werewolf drama that stars Laura Vandervoort to Syfy, to debut stateside in 2014.

Bitten, from indie producers No Equal Entertainment and Hoodwink Entertainment, was originally developed by Bell Media for its Space specialty channel, starting in early 2011.

The first season order came in August 2012, with eOne coming on board as a production partner in spring of 2013 just before the cameras rolled on the first season.

Bitten is due for a 2014 release on Space and Syfy.

The homegrown drama sees Vandervoort play Elena Michaels, a female werewolf, alongside fellow cast members Greg Bryk, Greyston Holt and Paul Greene.

Bitten is a fantastic blend of supernatural action, intense thrills, smouldering drama and a tortured love story that artfully adapts characters beloved for more than a decade by millions of readers around the world,” said Chris Regina, SVP of programming at Syfy, in a statement Tuesday.

The werewolf drama will run with a pack of Canadian dramas already on Syfy that include Continuum, Lost Girl and Haven.

“With a strong female lead at its core, we know audiences on both sides of the border will be rabid followers of Bitten,” Corrie Coe,SVP of independent production at Bell Media, said in her own statement.

The Syfy deal was negotiated by Carrie Stein for eOne.

Backed by the U.S. deal, the Canadian distributor will start shopping the Canadian sci-fi drama to international markets next month at MIPCOM.

Bitten is executive produced by J.B. Sugar for No Equal Entertainment, Patrick Banister and John Barbisan for Hoodwink Entertainment and Tecca Crosby, John Morayniss, and Margaret O’Brien for eOne.

Daegan Fryklind and Grant Rosenberg are executive producers and co-showrunners.
