As Toronto sets to welcome the world to its doorstep for TIFF, Playback too has reason to celebrate with release of our Fall 2013 issue.
Packed with interviews with veteran and up-and-coming Canadian filmmakers alike, the Fall issue spotlights TIFF films and other independent efforts which may not be TIFF bound but are making the festival rounds in the months to come.
Our feature story this issue looks at Canadian filmmakers on the world stage and includes interviews with up-and-coming international success stories like Denis Villeneuve, Jean-Marc Vallée and Richie Mehta, as well as veterans such as Paul Haggis. We also go behind-the-scenes of two TIFF-bound films (The Husband, Gabrielle) and one Whistler-bound film (Cas & Dylan) to find out the stories behind their funding, scripts and casting.
A particular highlight of this issue is an intimate conversation between directors Jonathan Sobol and Peter Stebbings, both of whom will see their sophomore feature efforts debut at TIFF this year. See the whole article on pg. 26 of the e-magazine.
Finally, our tribute this issue focuses on Serendipity Point Films, which is celebrating 15 years of filmmaking under the creative oversight of Robert Lantos, one of Canada’s best-known producers. Former Playback editor Mark Dillon sits down with the legendary producer in his Rosedale office to reflect on achievements past and get a glimpse into how the company is evolving for its next 15 years. Read the full feature on pg. 48.
This is also the issue in which we celebrate our 2013 Hall of Fame Inductees and our annual 10 to Watch. Keep your eye on the Daily for the full rollout of profiles leading up to our Sept. 12 gala event!
In other Playback news, I’m pleased to share that I’ve returned to Playback in a new role as content director and editor. In this role, I join our newly promoted associate editor, Danielle Ng-See-Quan, who oversees Playback Daily, and our roving freelance reporter Etan Vlessing. I look forward to working with both Danielle and Etan on our online and print publications, as well as continuing to develop Playback‘s growing suite of events.
See you at TIFF!
