Atlantic Film Festival unveils lineup

Following last month’s announcement that Don McKellar’s The Grand Seduction will open the Atlantic Film Festival in Halifax, the fest has unveiled its full program of more than 180 films screening Sept. 12 to 19 in Halifax.

Gia Milani’s All the Wrong Reasons will screen as the festival’s Atlantic Gala on Sept. 13, following a bow at TIFF. The film stars the late Cory Monteith, Kevin Zegers, Emily Hampshire and Karine Vanasse, and is produced by Tony Whalen and Milani. Pacific Northwest Pictures is distributing the film in Canada.

The festival will close with Ralph Fiennes’ The Invisible Woman on Sept. 19, which tells the story of a secret love affair between Charles Dickens and Nelly Ternan. The film stars Fiennes and Felicity Jones and is distributed in Canada by Mongrel Media.

Screening as part of the festival’s 2013 Rogers Special Presentations are Canuck films There are Monsters from Jay Dahl, William Macgillivray’s Hard Drive, Ron Maxwell’s Cooperhead, Jason Priestley’s Cas & Dylan, which is slated to open the Whistler Film Festival, Jonathan Sobol’s The Art of the Steal, and Jeremiah Chechik’s The Right Kind of Wrong, along with Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Don Jon, Peter Landesman’s Parkland, Richard Ayoyade’s The Double, and Abdellatif Kechiche’s Blue is the Warmest Colour.

And five films will screen in the Atlantic Focus program, including John Walker’s documentary Arctic Defenders, John Young’s Bad Coyote and Geoff D’Eon’s Zoo Revolution in a joint presentation, and Christopher Richardson’s Regret and Jeffrey St. Jules’ Let the Daylight into the Swamp, also in a joint presentation.

“The key to pleasing the audience is that special magic of having ‘something for everyone’ and this year we do,” said AFF exec director Wayne Carter in a statement.

The Atlantic Film Festival takes place in Halifax on Sept. 12 to 19, 2013.
