Sony Pictures acquires horror-thriller Grace

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has acquired upcoming horror-thriller Grace, from L.A.-based production and financing co Automatik, Vancouver’s Oddfellows Entertainment and Toronto’s Colony Pictures.

Grace marks the directorial feature debut for Canadian Jeff Chan, who previously directed live-action shorts for Activision’s Call of Duty franchise.

Chan co-wrote the script with fellow Canuck Chris Paré.

Grace tells the story of an oppressed 18-year-old tormented by the ungodly forces that plague her through a first-person point of view.

“Jeff Chan impressed us with his unique vision for Grace, and we came on board as soon as we read the script,” said SPWA senior VP acquisitions Joe Matukewicz. “This continues SPWA and Stage 6 Films’ belief in young, fresh filmmakers and builds upon SPWA’s relationship with BKJ from the Insidious franchise,” he added.

The film, currently in production in Vancouver, stars local actress Alexia Fast (Jack Reacher) as the title character, with Alan Dale, Lin Shaye, Alexis Knapp, Joel David Moore, Clarke Peters, and Canadian actor Brett Dier (Ravenswood, Bomb Girls).

Automatik’s Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Insidious franchise) and Canuck Chris Ferguson of Oddfellows are producing Grace.

Colony Pictures’ Chan and IM Global CEO Stuart Ford are exec producers.

EVP business affairs Michael Helfand negotiated the deal on behalf of SPWA.

Chan is repped by ICM Partners, Guymon Casady and Dean Schnider at Management 360, and Ryan LeVine at Jackoway Tyerman Wertheimer Austen Mandelbaum Morris & Klein.

Ferguson is repped by Adam Levine at Verve.

Automatik, founded in 2010, is a finance and production venture led by Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and backed by eOne and indie financing and sales company IM Global.
