My, how quickly the months tick by. It seems like it was only yesterday that we were shoveling out the driveway and it was so snowy and cold; now we need to be getting out to water the grass, it is so sunny and hot!
But that’s how fast things can change. Thanks to new technology, the rate of change is getting faster all the time, in all aspects of life. I say that as both a journalist and parent of two young children. In both aspects of my life the way things used to be done is being overhauled, and for inter-related reasons.
When it comes to screen entertainment content, particularly small screen content, it seems like change is happening at double time. With the summer issue of Playback we continue our look at how the forces of industry consolidation and media convergence are impacting not only the country’s independent production community but also its labour force, in particular its major professional associations and academic institutions.
The issue also includes the results of the annual Playback survey of indie production. As it is based upon information provided voluntarily by the indie community itself, it is viewed as an accurate barometer of the overall state of the industry. The results suggest 2012 was a good year.
The printed issue contained a list of the top 50 companies, plus results based on the entire cohort of respondents. As an added, online-only value we’ve prepared a list that includes the results from all the respondents. It is here (If you wish to print it, for best results, set your printer to landscape).
It also includes a profile of Muse Entertainment, the well-regarded and successful Montreal-based prodco that turns 15 in 2013.
