Films dominate Canadian Comedy Awards nominations

The nominees for the 14th annual Canadian Comedy Awards where announced Wednesday in Toronto.

The awards, which acknowledge Canadian artists by presenting the beaver statuette to winners in live, film, television, radio, and internet categories, will be handed out in Ottawa Oct. 6, the final day of a three-day festival of the same name.

Leading in nominations with nods in each of the five film categories (best direction in a feature, best writing, best male performance, best female performance and best feature film) are Breakthrough Entertainment’s Please Kill Mr. Know it All (directed by Colin Carter and Sandra Feldman), Julijette’s My Awkward Sexual Adventure (directed by Sean Garrity) and WANGO Film’s Dead Before Dawn 3D (directed by April Mullen).

In the TV or web series category, Space Janitors, directed by Geoff Lapaire, received four nominations, including best web series, best direction in a TV or web series, best ensemble performance and best male performance (for actor Scott Yamamura).

Show host Peter Anthony, who announced the nominees in the 29 categories Wednesday, is himself nominated in the category of best male standup.

The 2013 nominees for comedy person of the year, awarded to a comedy performer as voted by the public, are Lauren Ash, Colin Mochrie, Gerry Dee, Sugar Sammy and Steve Patterson.
