CFC, NBCUniversal to launch TV series exchange program

The Canadian Film Centre is launching the TV Series Exchange program with NBCUniversal Canada.

The initiative is designed to introduce Canadian writers and creators with TV series concepts targeted to both Canadian and U.S. networks to NBCUniversal creative executives.

The goal is to see more ideas developed or piloted with NBCUniversal, and for more Canadian talent to be hired on NBCUniversal shows filmed locally.

According to the CFC, the exchange will identify creative talent with whom NBCUniversal should forge relationships; identify series ideas that work for NBCUniversal’s channels; and better position select series concepts to attract NBCUniversal and Canadian broadcaster interest.

While more specific details for the initiative and its specific timelines will be available after June 14, the CFC has outlined three stages for the program.

Beginning in summer 2013, the TV Series Exchange program will host three meet and greet sessions between select Canadian writers and producers and NBCUniversal creative executives. The information exchanges will act as forums to share the company’s programming agendas and perspectives on  the scripted TV marketplace.

Then, the initiative will host three rounds of pitch meetings, in which up to eight writers and/or creators will be invited to discuss pre-selected series ideas or project slates with NBCUniversal execs and more closely identify the company’s programming needs.

If there’s interest in a particular project from NBCUniversal, the CFC will then work with the creator to provide creative and strategic support to develop the idea into a series proposal with potential for inkig a development or pilot deal with NBCUniversal.

The CFC first unveiled the program’s preliminary details on its Facebook page Tuesday.
