Telefilm has made another move to reduce costs and bureaucratic red tape for its Canada Feature Film Fund.
The agency consolidated its marketing, alternative distribution, web-ciné 360, and versioning assistance programs into one main marketing program to support indie film producers and distributors.
And while the theatrical release is still the driver for increased exposure sought by Telefilm Canada for Canadian films at home and abroad, film marketing and distribution on ancillary and digital platforms is also prized as the agency considers requests for financial support.
“The marketing program is designed to fund marketing activities aimed at increasing theatrical accessibility and enhancing opportunities for audience access via digital distribution and multiple viewing platforms,” Telefilm said in a statement Monday.
Indie producers can tap funding to cover up to 75% of eligible marketing costs with a $50,000 cap.
Besides accounting for Canadian content when deciding on performance envelopes for indie distributors, including whether a film is a minority or majority co-production,
Telefilm is also offering festival selection and awards bonuses.
For example, the new scoring grid gives two points each for a Canadian film selected to screen at Cannes, Venice, Berlin or Sundance, and two more points for an award received at either of those top festivals.
There’s also two points each for nominations or awards received from the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes, the Cesars in France and the U.K.’s BAFTA awards.
And a Canadian film will receive one point for certain awards received at Canadian festivals like the Toronto International Film Festival and Hot Docs in Toronto, or Montreal festivals like Fantasia and the Montreal World Film Festival.
And there’s another point for certain awards received at the Canadian Screen Awards, the Jutras and the DGC Awards.
Also on the festival front, Canadian films will receive one point each when selected or earning awards at B-list events like Telluride, the New York Film Festival and Locarno.
There’s no points on offer from selection to C-list festivals like SXSW, Tribeca, IDFA in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and one point is available when the same events grant a Canadian film an award.
Indie film distributors can tap up to $3.5 million from their performance envelopes with Telefilm Canada.
