Production has begun on JFK: The Smoking Gun, an international doc coproduction from Montreal-based Muse Entertainment and Australian partner Cordell/Jigsaw/Zapruder.

The Canada-Australia coproduction is based on the work of police detective Colin McLaren.

He spent four years investigating the forensic cold case of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, and believes he has found the “the smoking gun” that killed the U.S. president.

The two-hour documentary uses dramatic recreations, ballistic experiments, CGI and 3D animation to recreate the scenes at Dallas’ Dealey Plaza where the shooting took place, at Parkland Hospital and the Bethesda Naval Hospital where the autopsy was conducted.

JFK: The Smoking Gun is produced by Montreal’s Muse Entertainment and Australia’s Cordell/Jigsaw/Zapruder for Bell Media’s Discovery Canada, SBS Australia and ReelzChannel in the U.S. It will air in November 2013 to mark the 50th anniversary of Kennedy’s death.

Written by Steve Lucas, the documentary special is directed by Malcolm McDonald and produced by Jesse Prupas and Michael Cordell. Michael Prupas and Simon Egan are exec producers.

Muse Distribution International, Cordell/Jigsaw/Zapruder and Zodiak Rights are sharing worldwide distribution rights.

JFK: The Smoking Gun is shooting in Dallas, Texas, before moving to Montreal, where it will shoot to the end of June.

UPDATE May 29: Zodiak Rights is handling distribution for the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, German-speaking Switzerland, Italy, France, French-speaking Benelux and Switzerland. Muse is handling the rest of the world with the exception of Oceania and Asia, which are being handled by Cordell Jigsaw Zapruder.
