Awards
Numerous Canadian child actors are among the winners of the Young Artist Awards, which were handed out during a gala in Studio City, Calif. May 5.
The recipients are: Antoine Pilon and Alice Morel-Michaud, for their roles in theatrical film Less Pee-Wee 3D, Frederique Dufort for his role on Radio-Canada’s Unite 9, Addison Holley for her role on My Baby Sitter’s a Vampire on Disney Channel and Teletoon, Jake Sim for his role on The Magic Hockey Skates, a CBC TV movie, and Alisha Newton, for her role on CBC’s Heartland.
Season Premiere
The fourth and final season of scripted half-hour comedy Less Than Kind premieres on HBO Canada on June 2. The award-winning comedy airs on DirecTV’s Audience Network in the U.S.
As well, Hard Rock Medical, the TVO’s first commissioned half-hour drama series, premieres on June 9. It can also be viewed at hardrockmedical.com.
Theatrical release
White Pine Pictures’ documentary Fight Like Soldiers, Die Like Children, based on a book by the same title by senator Romeo Dallaire, begins a nine-city theatrical release with a show in Ottawa Friday (May 10). The run ends June 12. It is directed by Patrick Reed, who was researcher and producer on Shake Hands With the Devil, also based on Dallaire’s writing and experiences in Africa.
TIFF news
The TIFF Bell Lightbox’s Asian-focused multimedia installation, entitled A Century of Chinese Cinema, will focus on over 80 film titles and include a free exhibit, the Toronto cultural organization announced earlier this week. The event, billed as its flagship summer program and is the result of a partnership with the China Film Archive, the Hong Kong Film Archive and the Chinese Taipei Film Archive. , runs from June 5 until Aug. 11.
Film financing
Toronto filmmaker Sarah Goodman, who won a Hot Docs award for her short doc Army of One, has launched a crowdfunding campaign in support of her new scripted “humblecore” project Porch Stories. The goal is to raise $7,500 on Indiegogo.com. Shooting of the film is to start in June.
And the producers of Todd and the Book of Pure Evil (pictured) have launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds for an animated feature-length Todd movie, Todd and the Book of Pure Evil: The End of the End. The series didn’t receive a third season renewal, and, leaving viewers with a season two cliffhanger ending, the producers are aiming to wrap the series up with the animated feature. The goal is to raise $75,000.
