Cinedigm has acquired the U.S. rights to Yung Chang’s documentary The Fruit Hunters.

The U.S. digital distributor is planning a theatrical release in spring 2013, followed by release on VOD, digital and DVD.

The documentary about the world of exotic fruit and its fanatics, is co-produced by the National Film Board and Chang’s Montreal-based prodco EyeSteelFilm.

The Fruit Hunters features fruit horticulturalists, pomologists and enthusiasts, including actor Bill Pullman, who Chang followed for two years to explore their intense loves of fruit.

The film had its world premiere at the Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) and its U.S. premiere at the Palm Springs International Film Festival last month.

“Yung Chang and The Fruit Hunters team have made a unique, visually arresting film that is also quite entertaining. We look forward to engaging adventurous agriculturalists and foodies who will love it and, beyond that, inviting a broader audience to explore a passionate world they likely never knew existed,” said Cinedigm director of acquisitions Emily Rothschild in a statement.

Rothschild negotiated the deal with NFB head of sales Christina Rogers.

The Fruit Hunters is produced by EyeSteel’s Bob Moore and Mila Aung-Thwin, and the NFB’s Kat Baulu. EyeSteel’s Daniel Cross, the NFB’s Ravida Din and KinoSmith’s Robin Smith are exec producers.
