Starting this spring, Montreal’s Le Studio 39 is opening its doors to local film and TV productions.
The new studio, located minutes away from the downtown area, is 5000 square feet, half of which is an open area while the other half is a full-service production office.
The new studio is the first of three spaces planned to open as part of Le Studio 39.
Frédéric Sauvé and Andrew Mikus of Montreal-based post-production company Station 29 say they co-founded Le Studio 39 based on local producers’ and artists’ needs for more studio space.
“Mid-size studios are in short supply in the province of Quebec. Based on our analysis, there is a definite need and demand for this studio format, particularly in the Montreal area,” said Sauvé in a statement.
This year’s opening is the first phase of the project. By 2014, Sauvé and co-founder Mikus plan to open two more studios. The second studio will be 4500 square feet, while the third studio space will be 2000 square feet.
Once all three studios are open, they will be able to be operated by three different crews, with each studio operating independently with its own production office.
While the rentals fees still have to be worked out, Mikus tells Playback there is no time cap for the rental of a studio.
Sauvé and Mikus are entirely funding Le Studio 39 with the total $500,000 investment required to build the studio. Their Station 29 post-production shingle specializes in movies of the week and TV shows.
