Canadian film exhibitor Cineplex Entertainment is making digital home video entertainment available through the cloud.
Through UltraViolet, a free, cloud-based account, Cineplex Store customers will be able to access their digital movies via PC, mobile, smartphones, connected TVs or Blu-ray disc players.
“We believe the best way to experience e a movie first is on the theatre’s big screen, but when you want to see it again, UltraViolet gives you the added choice and flexibility to watch movies whenever and wherever you want,” said Cineplex Entertainment president and CEO Ellis Jacob in a statement. “When Canadians think of movies, we want them to think of Cineplex. Our goal is to become the one-stop destination for movie entertainment in Canada,” he added.
Cineplex on Thursday said it is the first retailer in Canada and only motion picture exhibitor in the world to offer the service.
Customers can rent or buy digital movies from the Cineplex Store and stream or download them to their home PC, select gaming devices or internet TV.
UltraViolet-enabled movies will contain a digital PIN Code which customers can add to their accounts, confirming their rights to watch that particular title either at home or on-the-go via various devices.
As with attending Cineplex movies, SCENE loyalty program members who purchase UltraViolet titles through the Cineplex store can earn points with every purchase.
Additionally, the UltraViolet titles can be shared among six household members, and up to three users can stream the titles at once.
The service launched in the U.S. and U.K. in late 2011.
