NSI announces first trainees in aboriginal doc course

The National Screen Institute has selected four teams in its new NSI Aboriginal Documentary course.

The chosen teams are producer Gabriel Constant and director Neil Bignell; producer Crystal Greene and director Cameron Courchene; producer Damien Ferland and director Rhayne Vermette; and producer Christopher Read and director Sam Vint, all of Manitoba.

The two-week training course, starting Jan. 14, provides Aborginal producer-director teams with training, mentorship and up to $16,000 cash towards production of a short documentary.

The students will have their completed projects available on-demand on MTS TV and aired nationally on program partner APTN and on the APTN website. The program participants will also travel to the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in April.

NBCUniversal earlier signed on as the program’s presenting sponsor this year, as part of a three-year partnership.
