Soska twins’ American Mary nets limited U.K. theatre release

Universal Pictures plans a limited U.K. theatrical release in January of American Mary, the horror thriller from directors Jen and Sylvia Soska and indie producer IndustryWorks.

The cinema run will back the upcoming DVD and Blu-Ray release of American Mary in the U.K. by the home entertainment division of Universal Pictures.

The Soska twins told Playback while attending the Whistler Film Festival that they will do a seven-city tour of Britain in January to market the film.

The European release follows Monster Pictures releasing the Canadian indie, which stars Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps) and Julia Maxwell, in Australia.

Universal Pictures holds the rights to American Mary in several international territories, including the U.K. and Germany.

The Soskas and their production shingle Twisted Twin Productions are in pre-production on their third movie, Bob, based on their own script.

The filmmakers are also at work on other projects, including jumping on board as directors of other movies as hired guns.

The Vancouver-based filmmakers also screened American Mary in Whistler Wednesday night, which marked a homecoming for the local filmmakers.

“We always wanted to go to Whistler,” Jen Soska said.

“We wanted to earn coming here. It’s a dream come true to bring our own film to the festival,” she added.
