Netflix Canada has acquired the exclusive online streaming rights for Canada to The Vampire Dairies, Pretty Little Liars and Fringe.
The syndication deal between Netflix and Warner Bros. International Television Distribution also includes licensing a host of studio movie titles like The Hangover Part II, The Dark Knight Rises and Horrible Bosses.
Netflix Canada will gain access to the film titles for a limited period after their pay TV window here.
And the Canadian video streaming service is now offering the first two seasons of The Vampire Diaries, with season three following on January 1, 2013.
In addition, all previous seasons of Pretty Little Liars are available to Netflix Canada subscribers, while Fringe, the science fiction series from J.J. Abrams, will be available here from Jan. 1.
The Warner Bros. licensing deal is timely for Netflix Canada as the video streaming service looks to maintain momentum signing new subscribers, against new and emerging competition online.
“Over the years, we’ve learned that our members love to immerse themselves in serialized dramas and great movies, and we think that our Canadian members are going to love these latest additions to the service,” Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix, said in a statement.
“We are pleased to extend our great relationship with Netflix to the benefit of their Canadian subscribers — giving them access to full past seasons of some of our most popular and addictive serialized dramas and blockbuster feature film titles,” Jeffrey R. Schlesinger, president of Warner Bros. International Television, added in his own statement.
