Screen Media Films has acquired U.S. theatrical rights to Jamie Kastner’s The Secret Disco Revolution (pictured), with a run in American cinemas planned for June 2013.
The distributor picked up the satirical doc – which features interviews with disco icons such as Gloria Gaynor, The Village People and Thelma Houston – from sales agent Entertainment One Films International (eOne).
This deal follows eOne’s sale of the doc to Japan’s Kadokawa, Italy’s Sky Arts, and Maywin for CIS territories. Additionally, the film has been acquired by ZDF ARTE for Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France.
In an interview with Playback sister publication realscreen earlier this year, Kastner discussed his aim of having the doc be “something a little bit playful, befitting the subject matter.”
The film enjoyed its world premiere at TIFF in Canada in September, and has played at festivals in London, Copenhagen and Sweden, among others.
“For anyone that grew up with disco, this film will transport you back in time while filling in the blanks to what you didn’t even realize was happening around you,” said Screen Media Films president Suzanne Blech. “If you weren’t around at the time to get caught up in the disco craze, the music and the moves will make you want to get up and dance.”
The deal was negotiated by Blech and Charlotte Mickie from eOne, with Andrew Herwitz from The Film Sales Company acting on behalf of the filmmakers.
