A total of 19 projects have received backing in the Harold Greenberg Fund’s script development program, including Ian Harnarine’s Doubles With Slight Pepper and Patricia Rozema’s adaptation of Robert Munsch’s Paper Bag Princess, the fund announced late last week.

Harnarine is adapting his Gemini-winning short to a feature film. In September he won Telefilm’s Pitch This! competition at the Toronto International Film Festival, receiving $10,000 in development funding.

Michael Hirsh of Cookie Jar Entertainment is producing Rozema’s adaptation of Munsch’s kid’s story, about a paper-bag clad young woman who sets off on an epic quest to save her fiancé and outsmart a dragon. The project, supported in polish and packaging, has yet to attach a director.

Also supported by the fund’s script development program is Halima Ouardiri’s Body, a Swiss co-production about a young woman who is hired as a bodyguard for a visiting Saudi princess. The project, based on Ouardiri’s own experiences, is produced by Mila Aung-Thwin of Montreal-based EyeSteelFilm and also received support from SODEC.

The script development program, which assists in the development of quality Canadian feature film scripts, receives a yearly contribution of $1.3 million from Astral’s The Movie Network.
