Whistler unveils industry program for fest-goers

China, international co-productions, and TV movie production will be big talking points at the upcoming Whistler Film Festival, judging by its industry program rolled out on Tuesday.

Veteran Canadian producers like Brightlight Pictures partner Shawn Williamson and Reel One Entertainment’s Tom Berry will join Canada Media Fund topper Valerie Creighton to discuss Canadian TV co-productions like The Borgias and The Kennedys that are dominating primetime schedules.

Other niche programming includes a panel on stereoscopic 3D, featuring a workshop with Emily Carr S3D Centre team members, and another panel on the global visual effects production business, to include Rodeo FX exec Ara Khanikan, Image Engine Design CEO Greg Holmes, and Digital Domain’s Ivy Zhong.

Whistler will also talk about the latest in movie distribution in a panel entitled “The Evolution of Exhibition,” to bring together Andrew Frank of Mongrel Media, First Weekend Club’s Anita Adams, and CineCoup founder J Joly.

“This year, the Whistler Summit is all about reaching out. Reaching out to and new platform digital distribution opportunities, originating from media savvy entrepreneurs.” Whistler director of programming Paul Gratton said in a statement about the Nov. 30 to December 2 industry program.

There’s also a nod to online video with the new Shortwork Lab, a full day devoted to narrative short-form storytelling, backed by contributions from Pixar Canada’s creative director Dylan Brown and chief technical officer Darwyn Peachey.

Whistler earlier announced the inaugural China Canada gateway for film script competition to unfold on November 29 as 12 Canadian writer/producer teams pitch  projects to three Chinese studios.
