Canadian filmmaker Sarah Polley’s doc debut Stories We Tell (pictured) has been acquired by distributors in the U.S., U.K., Australia and Poland.

The film, which premiered in Toronto on Friday (Sept. 7) and is backed by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), has been picked up by Artificial Eye in the U.K., Palace Films in Australia and Gutek Film in Poland.

And RoadsideAttractions has confirmed it has acquired all U.S. rights to Stories We Tell, and is planning an early 2013 theatrical release for the doc in the States. The deal was negotiated by Roadside co-president Howard Cohen, with the NFB’s Christina Rogers representing the filmmakers.

The news comes after Polley spoke at the doc’s Canadian premiere of the “agony” she faced in making such a personal film, which delves deeply into family affairs.

Stories We Tell has been winning rave reviews since premiering at the Venice International Film Festival last month.
