The City of Toronto has partnered with the Canadian Film Centre and short-form video content producer and distributor iThentic on Toronto Revealed, a new short film initiative announced Monday.
Through the program, developed by the Toronto Film, Television and Digital Media Office to boost support of local talent and promote the city, five local emerging filmmakers will receive $10,000 in financial support towards the production of their films.
The emerging filmmakers will additionally be mentored by acclaimed Canadian filmmakers including Jennifer Baichwal, Peter Mettler, Bruce McDonald, Patricia Rozema and Ingrid Veninger.
The 2012 participants are Terril Calder with Repercussions, Cait Cantillon with 504, Jason Charters and Liam Romalis with In the Skin of an Image, Mark Ellam with The Structure of the Future and Tess Girard with Concrete Impressions.
The financial support will come from the city of Toronto and Toronto Film, Television and Digital Media Office, while Toronto-based iThentic will manage the project, with Michelle Latimer on board as supervising producer.
“[iThentic’s role has included] working to secure the 5 mentors and the initial list of 50-plus emerging filmmakers. They assisted with the drafting of the call for submissions and managed the selection process. They co-ordinated the introductions and initial meetings with the mentors and will be monitoring their progress. iThentic is also developing the communications strategy, and seeking opportunities for the exhibition of the final films. They will continue to liaise with the City and Film Commissioner to ensure the smooth execution of the project and its success,” said Toronto film commissioner Peter Finestone in an emailed statement to Playback.
The films, which are a look at Toronto’s “untold stories,” will be produced over the next three to four months.
