Cineplex completes acquisition of four AMC theatres

Cineplex says it has completed a deal with Kansas City-based AMC Entertainment to acquire four of its Canadian movie theatre outlets.

The deal, in which Cineplex also acquired AMC’s indirect subsidiary, AMC Ventures, was announced in June. Cineplex announced the completion Thursday.

It sees the theatres open under the Cineplex brand starting Friday, with approximately 250 AMC employees joining the Cineplex workforce.

Included in the acquisition are Ontario-based AMC Courtney Park in Mississauga, AMC Yonge and Dundas in Toronto, and AMC Winston Churchill in Oakville and the sole Quebec-based outlet AMC Forum in Montreal.

By Sept. 30, Cineplex will convert all remaining 35mm theatre projectors to Christie Digital DLP Cinema projectors, and may also add UltraAVX auditoriums, VIP cinemas or XSCAPE entertainment centres to one or more of the acquired locations.

Additional RealD 3D systems may also be added to the locations, but all existing IMAX locations will continue operations.
