Sportsnet has inked a deal with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) for the Canadian rights from 2012 to 2015 for the UEFA Europa League soccer games.
The three-year deal is the latest that sees Sportsnet and arch-rival TSN increasingly divide up the TV sports media rights market in Canada.
The agreement will see the Rogers Media subsidiary offer 205 UEFA Europa Cup soccer matches each season, to be made available on the TV, online and mobile platforms.
The UEFA deal follows Sportsnet earlier acquiring the 2012-2015 UEFA Champions League media rights for Canada.
Away from UEFA league play, Bell Media earlier acquired for its TSN and TSN2 channels the exclusive Canadian rights to the upcoming EURO 2012 and 2016 European football championships, as part of yet another deal with UEFA.
The big-ticket deals by Sportsnet and TSN for soccer rights stands in contrast to Shaw Media, which is set to shutter its Fox Sports World Canada channel at the end of April.
Fox Sports World’s TV soccer rights, including Italian Serie A games, were picked up by TLN and The Score.
