Imax promotes Mark Welton to drive international growth

Canadian giant screen exhibitor Imax continues to set its sights internationally by promoting Mark Welton to president of Imax Theatres.

In his new role, Welton will oversee Imax’s theatre sales and operation growth in fast-growing markets like China, Russia, India and Latin America.

Just last month, Imax hired former Paramount Pictures International exec Andrew Cripps to be president of its Europe, Middle East and Africa operations.

Welton most recently served as Imax’s executive VP of corporate and digital development and theatre operations.

He was instrumental in helping Imax sign multi-theatre partnerships with two major North American exhibitors, AMC and Regal Cinemas.

Now he will look to recruit more exhibitor partnerships internationally as the Toronto-based company continues to diversify away from its maturing North American base.

“Mark has a proven track record of achievement within Imax,” company CEO Richard Gelfond said in a statement.

“His in-depth knowledge of our business, coupled with his operational and industry expertise, has helped us expand our business in key markets,” he added.

Welton will also oversee Imax’s continuing digital transition, which includes extensive R&D development in digital projection and theatres at the company headquarters in suburban Toronto.
