CRTC approves GlassBOX News channel

Here’s some breaking news: Michael MacMillan’s GlassBOX Television has the CRTC’s okay to launch a national news channel, GlassBOX News.

The broadcast license is for a mainstream English language national news service, with updated news reports every two hours.

Launching GlassBOX News as a specialty category C service is a departure for the cross-platform broadcaster best known for its Aux music channel and comedy network Bite.

GlassBOX, which is majority controlled by Blue Ant Media, Michael MacMillan’s  investment vehicle, also recently relaunched the Travel+Escape specialty channel.

GlassBOX News will operate in a crowded news channel field, with Rogers Media recently launching CityNews Channel, a 24/7 Toronto news channel.

And nationally, the upstart Sun News launched as a 24-hour news channel competing against all-news channels operated by the CBC and CTV networks.
