CBC’s The Debaters signs up Hollywood representation

Canadian indie producer Big Widget Productions first took The Debaters from radio to TV on the CBC.

Now the homegrown TV quiz/comedy competition series could be headed across the border.

Big Widget Productions has signed up William Morris Endeavor to help pitch the Canadian TV debating concept to U.S. networks.

That’s a natural considering co-executive producer Brian K. Roberts is originally an American TV director and producer who caught an early CBC radio episode of The Debaters soon after moving to Canada.

“It was really, really funny, and I wondered ‘why isn’t this on television?’” he said Tuesday.

It turns our Richard Side originally created The Debaters for TV, though it first found a home on CBC radio.

So Roberts optioned the TV rights.

The Debaters reformats and reinvents comedy in a smart way. It challenges comedians with subjects ranging from topical to taboo,” he added.

U.S. politicians this election year are already helping put TV debating firmly back into primetime, so the Canadian producers are looking to strike while it’s hot in Hollywood by injecting comedy into the mix.

Roberts has directed a number of Canadian TV series in recent years, including Little Mosque on the Prairie and My Babysitter’s a Vampire.

He also directed 26 episodes of the TV version of The Debaters last year, with Richard Side sharing the executive producer credits.

The Canadian series concept will be represented by WME’s Amir Shahkhalili on studio lots in Los Angeles.
