Hollywood FX producer Stargate Studios opens Toronto office

Hollywood visual effects producer Stargate Studios is headed east from Vancouver to open a Toronto operation.

Stargate Studios Toronto will be headed up by Kris Wood, whose credits include Maggie Hill, Happy Town and Haven.

The Stargate Toronto operation will launch with 15 producers, supervisors and artists doing visual effects compositing, 3D and graphics in Liberty Village.

The Canadian satellite division is currently at work on the third season of Haven (pictured) and a new series, Against the Wall.

The move by Stargate follows the trend of post work moving from B.C. to Ontario, spurred by the eastern province’s all-spend tax credit.

Sam Nicholson, who opened Stargate Studios in 1989, said the new Toronto office was meeting rising demand locally for visual effects work.

“We have had an office in Vancouver for 10 years, and our Toronto studio complements our plans to strengthen our global network of visual effects companies,” he said.

Stargate also partners with Labyrinth in Mumbai, and The Bigger Picture in Malta.
