Cineflix Studios names Miura Kite as EVP, development

Canadian prodco Cineflix is continuing to bolster its Studio division with the addition of former Playtone exec Miura Kite.

As EVP, development, Kite will oversee the company’s burgeoning scripted slate in the U.S., reporting to NYC-based Cineflix Studios president Christina Wayne, and head up the scripted division in Cineflix Media’s new L.A. office.

Prior to her Nov. 7 start date with Cineflix, Kite was head of development at The Playtone Company, with coproducer credits on HBO’s Game Change and its dramatic miniseries, The Pacific and development credits on Charlie Wilson’s War, The Polar Express, Where the Wild Things Are and five seasons of HBO’s Big Love.

In joining Cineflix, Kite says she’s looking forward to directing her energy into television development and working with Wayne.

“It’s an exciting time for [Cineflix Studios],” Kite tells Playback Daily. “I have really admired Christina Wayne for a long time. We’d spoken about material in the past and we have similar tastes, and I just thought the opportunity to work with her and focus on television during this exciting time for television, at a company that’s so well set up internationally – it just seemed like the perfect moment.”

In looking ahead to building Cineflix’s development slate, Kite says her eye is drawn to high-quality scripts that work on multiple levels, both for different viewers and repeat viewings.

“I think a Cineflix project is elevated, sophisticated, plays on multiple levels. I like the idea of cerebral but still accessible; things like The Sopranos, Mad Men, and even now on the network side, you have shows like Friday Night Lights or Modern Family. There’s such a great variety right now and [Cineflix] is really set up to do cable or network, but I think at any place, it would be elevated, quality programming.”

Cineflix Studios, launched in 2010, is currently at work on 19th century crime drama Copper, which is slated to air on Showcase in Canada in 2012, and is in development on The Command for TNT.

Recent Cineflix Media hires include Chris Bonney as CEO, rights, in London, and Lisa Levenson, who is heading up the new L.A. office.
