Classic rock revivalists The Sheepdogs are still riding out the buzz created this summer when they became the first unsigned band to grace the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.
And Winnipeg-based Farpoint Films has jumped on the bandwagon, announcing this week that it is in production on a documentary about the band’s remarkable transformation from prairie rockers to Rolling Stone cover boys.
Produced by Farpoint co-founder John Barnard, the film will follow the Saskatoon-based band’s experiences after the debut of the Rolling Stone cover. The band earned the cover via a contest hosted by the magazine, beating out 15 other acts for the honour of appearing on the front of the iconic American magazine.
The doc has already been licenced by pay network Super Channel in Canada and its slated for a 2013 premiere. Additional rights to the film are still available.
“I think what’s really compelling about The Sheepdogs is they didn’t just sort of trip and fall into this. They are in this through a lot of hard work, and it’s no accident that they’re the people who won this cover. But what’s really interesting is what they do afterwards,” Barnard told Playback Daily.
“This is very much an intimate portrait of the guys themselves,” he continued. “I think that the film will gradually make its way deeper into their lives and become more of a … document of their personal journey on this thing.”
Live performance scenes from the band’s current North American tour will be featured, as well as a peek into the studio as they record their first major-label (Atlantic Records) album next year.
