Electric Car, The Whale to bookend Planet in Focus film fest

Revenge of the Electric Car is slated to open the 12th annual Planet in Focus Environmental Film Festival in October, which will close with Ryan Reynolds-narrated film The Whale.

The opening doc (pictured) from director Chris Paine (Who Killed the Electric Car?) takes a behind-the-scenes look into Nissan, GM and Tesla Motors with narrator Tim Robbins to look at the story of the electric car comeback.

The Whale will cap off the environmental fest, telling the true story of a baby orca separated from his family. The film is executive produced by Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johannson, and directed by Suzanne Chisholm and David Parfit.

“[These two films] embody the often contradictory forces at play in debates about the state of our planet,” said Planet in Focus executive director Sarah Margolius in a statement. “One is a provocative documentary about the quest to develop a zero emission automobile, which will help to end our society’s reliance on fossil fuels, and the other is a majestic personal tale of how a lone, lost baby whale reveals the difficulties of wildlife protection in the face of shrinking natural habitats.”

Landscapes will also be a major theme at this year’s fest, with films that delve into how human-made and natural landscapes shape our identity and future, notes director of programming Kathleen Mullen.

Planet in Focus runs from Oct. 12 to 16 in Toronto. For more information, click here.
