Telefilm invests in four Canadian movies

Telefilm Canada on Friday waved its wallet by confirming investment in four English-language homegrown movies, including Deanne Foley’s wrestling drama Newfoundland Beatdown.

The Marthe Bernard and Robb Wells-starrer from writer Iain MacLeod and indie producer Pope Productions recently shot in St. John’s.

Telefilm, recording its regional English Canadian investments from the Canada Feature Film Fund for the first quarter of its current calendar year, also said it invested in the genre picture The Mithras Conspiracy from writer/director Chris MacBride and producer Resolute Management Group.

The feature portrays childhood friends and filmmakers making a documentary about a global conspiracy culture, only to find their chief subject has disappeared without a trace.

Lee Kim and Aaron Poole produced The Mithras Conspiracy, which is now in post-production. Entertainment One will release the picture.

Telefilm Canada also flagged investment in director April Mullen’s Dead Before Dawn, the Christopher Lloyd-starring indie 3D horror film from Wango Films that shot in Niagara Falls, Ontario.

And there was Telefilm coin for Wiebke von Carolsfeld’s Stay, a Canadian-Irish coproduction from Amerique Film Inc.

Each of the four films have a budget of less than $2.5 million, and received up to $750,000 from Telefilm.
