Which indie producers are best placed for Geminis gold?

It came as no surprise to many that Flashpoint coproducers Pink Sky Entertainment and Avamar Entertainment lead the nominations pack for the 26th Gemini Awards  – it’s an achievement they’ve repeated each season of the CTV crime drama.

But how did rival indie producers fare with their own haul of Gemini nominations going into the industry kudosfest?

Almost matching Flashpoint‘s 17 noms was HBO Canada comedy Call Me Fitz, by coproducers Amaze Film + Television, Big Motion Pictures and Entertainment One, which earned 16 Gemini nominations.

And The Nightingale Company snagged 10 nominations for another new comedy, Living In Your Car, for TMN/Movie Central.

Also sharing in the Gemini riches is Muse Entertainment, which coproduced The Pillars of the Earth and the controversial mini-series The Kennedys, each of which pulled in 10 nods.

And Geminis love was extended to Todd and the Book of Pure Evil, a comedy/horror series for Space from indie producers Aircraft Pictures, Corvid Pictures, and Frantic Films, which earned eight nominations.

Muse Entertainment’s Durham County picked up another six nominations, including a best dramatic actor nod for Hugh Dillon, and its Being Human series earned five nods, mostly in craft categories.

Elsewhere, Take 5 Productions, which has a focus on international coproductions, grabbed eight nominations for The Borgias, a European costume drama for Bravo!/CTV, while also grabbing six nominations for The Tudors, the Showtime period drama that ran for four seasons on the CBC, and was structured as a Canada-Ireland coproduction.

Other big Gemini hauls by indie producers included Galafilm earning seven nominations for 18 to Life, and Rookie Blue grabbing six nominations for coproducers Thump Inc. and Entertainment One.

Also getting a half-dozen Gemini nods is Temple Street Productions’s Being Erica for the CBC, including performance nominations for Erin Karpluk and Michael Riley.
