Howie Mandel is to produce a U.S. version of a Danish comedy format as the next project for his Alevy Productions shingle.
Mandel will partner with Angel City Factory to co-produce the local version of Celebrity Stand-Up, which today bowed on Danish broadcaster TV2 (July 18).
No U.S. or Canadian broadcaster is yet attached to the project.
Alevy Productions also coproduced the earlier Fox show Mobbed and Howie Do It for NBC and Global Television with Angel City Factory.
Their latest joint project will feature celebrities risking public humiliation as they write and perform a stand-up act over five days.
Each one-hour episode of the U.S. version will feature two celebrities looking into their lives for humour and testing their jokes on unsuspecting members of the public. The celebrities will then perform their stand-up routines in front of a live audience, which will decide their fate.
“There really isn’t anything like Celebrity Stand-Up on air in the U.S. right now,” Howie Mandel said in a statement.
“I see it as a unique and clever spin on the immersive celebrity interview. The contestants must examine their own lives to write sketches based on their personal experiences, and challenge themselves to go outside their comfort zones,” he added.
Celebrity Stand-Up was created by Respirator, a Danish producer that is part of French format giant Banijay Group, as is Angel City Factory.
“We’re delighted to be working with Howie once more on Celebrity Stand-Up,” said Chris Cowan, co-CEO of Angel City Factory.
“Howie is still a prolific stand-up comedian himself as well as a well-known and experienced TV personality, so as a producer, he will really be able to get the most out of this format,” he added.
