Five Canadian feature films will make their debuts at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, which will also feature a tribute to filmmaker Denis Villeneuve.
“Major events such as Karlovy Vary highlight the cultural success of Canada’s film industry and also encourage the industry’s industrial and commercial development,” said Telefilm Canada executive director Carolle Brabant in a statement.
Four of the five films will have their world premieres at KVIFF, including Roméo Onze (director Ivan Grbovic, Montreal’s Reprise Films) and Collaborator (director Martin Donovon, Toronto’s DViant Films and New York’s This Is That) in Official Competition; Laurentie (directors Simon Lavoie and Mathieu Denis, Montreal’s Metafilms) in Out of Competition and Sunflower Hour (director Aaron Houston, Vancouver’s Unpaved Productions, pictured above) during the Forum of Independents.
Meanwhile, Jason Eisener’s Hobo with a Shotgun from Toronto-based Rhombus Media and Whizbang Films, and Halifax’s Yer Dead Productions, will have a midnight screening.
The Villeneuve tribute will include four of his features : Un 32 août sur terre (32nd Day of August on Earth), Maelström, Polytechnique and Incendies, along with two shorts, Next Floor and REW-FFWD.
The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival runs from July 1-9.
