James Moore (pictured) is staying put as Canadian Heritage minister after Prime Minister Stephen Harper unveiled a federal cabinet for his majority government on Wednesday.
And with Tony Clement moving to the Treasury Board, Christian Paradis becomes the federal industry minister, charged with overseeing CRTC-sensitive portfolios like reducing foreign ownership limits on the telecommunications sector and resolving Ottawa’s stance on internet usage-based billing.
Moore, also known as Canada’s iPod minister, first took the Heritage post in 2008, while seated as an MP for a suburban Vancouver riding.
His immediate responsibilities in the new Parliament will include bringing about long-sought copyright reform legislation into law, and shuffling the deck on Canada’s international coproduction treaties as part of an industry consultation.
The federal Conservatives appear especially keen to strike a new coproduction treaty with India after current negotiations conclude.
Other hot-button issues awaiting Moore in the new Parliament include a possible first-time fee-for-carriage regime for domestic broadcasters.
