The CRTC approved two new channels for the Asian Television Network (ATN) this week, awarding Category 2 licences for channels devoted to Caribbean and South Asian content.
The first of two applications for the Asian Television Network, which launched in 1971 and currently has a roster of 33 stations, was for a channel devoted to English specialty programming for the Caribbean community in Canada and South Asians of Indian origin from the Caribbean Islands.
Second of the two applications was for the ATN South Asian English News Channel 2, a national, ethnic Category 2 specialty programming undertaking that would be devoted to news from the South Asian subcontinent broadcast in the English language.
These two channels are not the first additions for the network this year. It recently got CRTC approval for a 100% Hindi-language specialty network that will air comedy series and feature films.
