CTV gets The Voice competition series

Another European music talent show has crossed the Atlantic onto the CTV schedule.

The broadcaster has picked up the Canadian TV rights to NBC’s The Voice, from Mark Burnett and based on the popular Voice of Holland format.

Add that to CTV’s other TV singfests such as Fox’s American Idol juggernaut and the upcoming U.S. version of X-Factor from Simon Cowell.

The Voice has it all: pedigree, concept, star-power and production value,” Mike Cosentino, senior vice president of programming at CTV Networks, said in a statement.

It also has an advertiser-friendly, spring-to-summer 13-episode footprint for Tuesday nights on CTV, simulcast with NBC.

The series will bow on April 26 and May 3 with two-hour episodes, before settling into the 8 p.m. timeslot on Tuesdays from May 10.

CTV also plans weekly encore airings on MuchMusic and E! for the competition series from John de Mol’s format factory Talpa Media, Mark Burnett and Warner Horizon Television.

The Voice, hosted by Carson Daly, will have celebrity judges Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton choose a singing sensation after audition and elimination rounds.

The latest CTV acquisition adds to a crowded field for U.S. talent shows in Canadian primetime: Citytv airs America’s Got Talent, and Nigel Lythgoe’s CMT’s Next Superstar series is also to debut.

On the home front, there’s Canada Sings! set for a Fall 2011 run on Global Television.
