Just For Laughs goes uncensored for Funny As Hell series

Looking to bring more of a comedy club feel to the small screen, the Just For Laughs Television, HBO Canada and Movie Central are debuting the new edgy series Funny As Hell on Friday night.

The six-part series hosted by comic Jon Dore (pictured) was filmed last summer as part of the annual JFL Festival, in front of a live 250-person audience to evoke the more intimate atmosphere of an actual comedy club.

JFL was also looking to broaden the TV coverage of its fest, comedian Dore tells Playback Daily, deciding to do that by taking aspects of the fest’s popular The Alternative Comedy Show and the more crude Nasty Show and culling them together over the course of four nights.

In short, this is stepping beyond the boundaries of what was aired on previous JFL specials on the CBC.

“The producer (Evi Regev) wanted to showcase another side of The Nasty Show acts coming through with full hour, music performances,” said Dore. The result was a show complete with a mix of stand-up, musical comedy performances and digital sketches, including acts the likes of Hannibal Buress (writer, 30 Rock); TJ Miller (Cloverfield, She’s Out Of My League) and Eric Andre (Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Invention of Lying), to name a few.

The uncensored Funny As Hell filmed last summer in Montreal, coinciding with the JFL Festival. Dore said the series was filmed over four nights and edited to create a fluid six episodes.

“It was whatever people wanted to do, they did,” remarked Dore coyly about the performers. To find out what exactly that was, viewers will have to tune in to the premiere ep at 9:25 p.m. ET.
