Quebecor Media is making a long-awaited play to support an NHL team in Quebec City.
The Quebec media giant on Tuesday reached a deal with city hall in Quebec City to grab the management and naming rights for the city’s future $400 million arena for 25 years from a scheduled opening in 2015.
And Quebecor CEO Pierre Karl Peledeau made no secret his company’s backing for the city arena aims at the return of NHL hockey.
“Quebec is one of the most wonderful hockey cities in the world and I am determined to bring the Nordiques back,” he said.
To secure the arena management and naming rights, Quebecor Media agreed to invest between $110 million and $200 million, depending on whether Quebec City can land a pro hockey team.
