CTV and CBC offer new mobile news services

Two of Canada’s networks are making news with their mobile news offerings.

In BC, CTV has kicked off a three-minute digital version of its local noon newscast designed specifically for smartphones. The CTV News Digital Edition is hosted by CTV British Columbia News anchor Coleen Christie, and is free and requires no app installation.

The Digital Edition will be available for 24 hours until it is replaced by the next noon newscast.

“Because the newscast is app-free, there is no downloading, no hunting, viewers are not tethered to a computer,” noted Heron Hanuman, producer, CTV News Digital Edition and Manager, ctvbc.ca. “Instead, they have a very streamlined user experience which is important to busy Canadians. The launch of this mobile newscast delivers exactly what users want: a convenient, innovative, compelling and useful tool for news.”

Over at the CBC, the CBC News Mobile App arrives as the pubcaster intros its redesigned CBCNews.ca website.

The CBC News Mobile App, which is available for iPhone, iPad, BlackBerry and Android devices, provides real-time access to breaking news, extensive multimedia, social media tools and customization.

CBC News is already the first and most popular news choice online with more unique daily visitors than any other news site,” said Rachel Nixon, director of digital media for CBC News. “Now we’re building on that success by providing Canadians with a quicker, cleaner digital experience that offers them not just improved content but also the mobile tools to help shape and share the news and information they value.”

CBC says it emphasized expanded content, ease of use and increased browsing speed for both its redesigned online and mobile platforms.
