CKLN-FM gets stay of execution

Toronto campus radio station CKLN-FM has received a stay of execution.

The CRTC on January 28 revoked the license for the Ryerson University radio station after failing to reinstate sound governance, and set February 12 as a deadline to go off the air.

But Ontario court justice Carolyn Layden-Stevenson on Friday offered CKLN-FM a temporary stay of the CRTC decision, at least until the Federal Court of Appeal considers the regulatory ruling, likely in April.

“We are thrilled and relieved by the decision which means that the diverse voices that make up our community radio station will continue to be heard for now,” CKLN board vice-chair Andrew Lehrer said Friday in a statement.

The student-run radio station first came to the notice of the CRTC in 2008 with allegations of ongoing instability inside CKLN, leading to airwave disruptions.

The CRTC rarely yanks broadcast licenses, with Quebec radio station CHOI-FM losing its license in 2005 being one occasion.
