WGC warns CRTC against more US re-runs

More U.S. re-runs are coming to Canadian TV. Writers Guild of Canada topper Maureen Parker is sure of it.

Parker is also certain the CRTC can avoid that fate, and much else that ills Canadian TV, when it sets a new regime for Canadian broadcasters after upcoming license renewal hearings.

“We look to the CRTC to enforce the intent of the TV policy and uphold the spirit of the Broadcasting Act. We want our Canadian TV,” Parker said as the WGC released its submission to the CRTC on Canadian broadcaster license-renewal applications.

If private broadcasters have their way, the WGC warned, Canadian broadcasters will air even less quality Canadian programming and more US reruns than already fills their primetime schedules.

The writers guild says it will support the CRTC’s proposal that Canadian programming expenditures should represent 30% of broadcast revenues, but added “CTV, Shaw, Corus and Rogers should use this figure as a floor not a ceiling.”

The WGC also wants 10% of program expenditures to go to shows of national interest, including quality drama and documentaries.

The Writers Guild will make its case to the CRTC during upcoming license renewal hearings in April.
