The Canadian film industry’s report card for 2010 saw homegrown movies gross 3.3% to total box office nationwide, up modestly from a 2.9% share in 2009.
Year-end results from the Motion Picture Theatre Associations of Canada $1.03 billion last year at the local cinema, with local films accounting for $33.5 million of total ticket receipts.
The biggest Canadian earner was Resident Evil: Afterlife, which grossed $7.02 million at the nationwide box office, on its way to over $300 million in international box office, ahead of DVD sales.
Other box office jewels for Canadian film last year: Piche Entre Ciel Et Terre with $3.65 million in ticket sales, and Incendies with $2.67 million in box office in 2010, according to data prepared by Zoom Services for MPTAC published by the Globe and Mail newspaper Wednesday.
Incendies is still screening in Canadian theatres in 2011, enjoying an Oscar bump after its nomination in the best foreign language category. Six of the top-10 grossing Canadian films last year came out of Quebec.
