DirecTV in running to buy The Kennedys

DirectTV has surfaced as a possible buyer for The Kennedys, Muse Entertainment’s eight-part drama in search of a new U.S. home.

The satellite TV service is understood to be in early talks with Muse and co-producer Asylum Entertainment, with no final decision on a purchase yet to be made.

The preliminary negotiations mark a difficult period for Muse since A&E Television Network’s History channel on January 8 announced it had dropped the project.

U.S. channels said to have since passed on the controversial Camelot series include Showtime, FX and Starz, shrinking the number of top-drawer distribution outlets now open to the project’s distributor.

“Although The Kennedys is well-produced, well-acted and a quality piece of work, it doesn’t fit the Showtime programming brand,” the premium cable channel said in a statement.

The Greg Kinnear and Katie Holmes-starrer was shot in Toronto.

Shaw Media and broadcasters in another 30 international markets will stand by and air the miniseries.
