A memorial will be held this weekend for Douglas James Dales, who passed away last Friday at age 60. Dales, who started PS Production Services in Toronto almost 40 years ago, is remembered by the industry for his love of cinema and filmmakers.
In addition to his work with PS, Dales was also board president of Reel Canada, and served on the boards of associations such as the CFC, Film Ontario and the CMPA (nee The Canadian Film and Television Production Association). He was also acknowledged during his career with the Canadian Society of Cinematographers Bill Hilson Award and the CFTPA’s Jack Chisholm Award, both in recognition for his contributions to the industry.
In a message to employees, PS president Doug Barrett noted of Dales: “He was the founder and builder of our great company, patron of numerous causes, pursuer of many projects, supportive sponsor and lifelong friend to legions, generous contributor to the industry he helped assemble, family man, deep partner, a man of incredibly focused curiosity. We will all miss him terribly.”
Dales is survive by partner Khang Pham-New, sons Robert, David and Matthew and sisters Liz and Heather.
The memorial will be held on Sunday, December 12 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Showline/Harbourside Studios at 915 Lake Shore Blvd. East in Toronto.
